Surrender of Indian Passport

Procedure and Document Requirements

Indian nationals who have acquired foreign citizenship are required to surrender their Indian passport and obtain a Surrender Certificate. Applications must be submitted online through the portal: mportal.passportindia.gov.in/mission.

Step 1 – Register or Log In

  • First-time applicants: If you are availing a consular service from CGI Auckland for the first time, click “Register” on the portal and create an account. Save your new login credentials carefully.
  • Returning applicants: If you are already registered with CGI Auckland, log in with your existing credentials.

Step 2 – Complete and Submit the Application

  • Log in through “User Login” on the portal.
  • On the Applicant Home Page, click “Surrender of Indian Passport” to start a new application.
  • Before submitting, upload an ICAO-compliant photograph, a scanned copy of your signature, and all other required documents. This is mandatory.
  • Ensure all details exactly match the information in your Indian passport. Applications with mismatched information will be rejected.
  • If the applicant is a minor, both parents must sign the declaration page (last page of the form).
  • After submitting the form online, take a printout of the completed application.

Documents Required

Please submit the following documents with your application:

Completed and signed application form for Surrender of Indian Passport, generated and printed from the GPSP portal (mportal.passportindia.gov.in/mission). For minors, both parents must sign the last page (declaration) of the form.

Indian passport last held — original and photocopy.

Copy of the New Zealand / foreign Citizenship Certificate.

Coloured photocopy of the bio-pages of the New Zealand / foreign passport, attested by a Justice of the Peace, Notary, or Deputy Registrar.

If the Indian passport is lost, the following are required:

  • Photocopy of the lost Indian passport.
  • Travel summary from Immigration New Zealand.
  • Police report / FIR copy stating the lost Indian passport number.

Name Change Certificate (if applicable). Required if the applicant’s name on the foreign Citizenship Certificate or foreign passport differs from the name on the Indian passport. Note: the Surrender Certificate will be printed with the name exactly as it appears on the Indian passport.

For minors (under 18 years), copies of the bio-page of both parents’ passports, attested by a JP.

Fee Payment Proof – required if the application is sent by courier. View payment details
Payment may also be made at the Consulate using a debit card if submission is by appointment at the Consulate.

Affidavit for retention and/or travel, attested by a JP (download the affidavit form). Required if the applicant retained the Indian passport for more than 3 years after acquiring foreign citizenship, and/or travelled on the Indian passport after acquiring foreign citizenship. For a minor, the affidavit may be signed by either parent and must be attested by a JP.

A separate, self-addressed, prepaid courier envelope with a tracking facility, enclosed for the return of your passport and documents. Enclose one envelope per application. Please keep a record of the tracking numbers. (On the return courier bag, write the complete delivery address (the applicant’s address with contact number) and the sender address (Consulate General of India, Citizenship Section, Level 14, 151 Queen Street, Auckland 1010).)

Courier requirements

  • All courier bags — both incoming and return — must have a tracking facility. Do not send or attach a courier bag without tracking.
  • On the courier bag sent to CGI Auckland, write the complete sender address (the applicant’s address with contact number).
  • Keep a record of the tracking numbers for both your incoming and outgoing courier bags. CGI Auckland is unable to provide courier tracking details.
