NRI (Non-Resident Indian) Certificate

How to Apply

  1. Visit https://indianconsularservices.mea.gov.in/ and select:
    • Country: New Zealand
    • Mission: New Zealand – Auckland
    • Service: the relevant service (e.g. NRI Certificate - General Purpose or NRI Certificate - OCI Card Holder)
  2. Read "Information at a Glance before Apply", then click "Consular Service application form online".
  3. Register or log in, then complete and submit the online application.
  4. Upload the documents listed for your specific service (see the section below). If the website does not request a document that is listed as required and is applicable to you, combine it with another document you are uploading.
  5. Once the online scrutiny is completed, an email will be received. Book an appointment through the CGI website https://www.cgiauckland.gov.in/apt/ and select "Other Miscellaneous Applications – Counter No. 1"
  6. Visit the Consulate General of India, Auckland on the booked date with all original documents and the supporting copies listed for your service.

NRI (Non-Resident Indian) Certificate

A Non-Resident Indian (NRI) Certificate is issued to Indian citizens abroad to ratify their NRI status for various purposes, allowing them to access the benefits and privileges associated with that status in India.

There are two application paths depending on the applicant's passport:

  • A. Indian passport holders
  • B. Foreign / NZ passport holders with an OCI Card

Fee (both categories): NZ$45 (modes of payment).

A. Indian Passport Holders

Eligibility:

  • The applicant must be an Indian national holding a valid Indian passport.
  • The applicant must have stayed in their country of residence for more than 182 days in the relevant financial year (April–March).

Documents required:

  1. Completed and signed Miscellaneous Consular Services application form.
  2. Completed NRI Status Declaration form (https://www.cgiauckland.gov.in/content/DeclarationforNRIandNRIparity.pdf).
  3. Original Indian passport, plus photocopies of pages showing visa, arrival, departure and immigration stamps.
  4. Entry/Exit List, duly filled in, confirming the length of the applicant's stay outside India during the relevant financial year (April–March) (Original to be carried to Consulate for submission).
  5. Copy of current and valid New Zealand visa.
  6. Proof of address in New Zealand — any one of: NZ driving licence, photo ID issued by a NZ government agency, water/telephone/electricity bill, current bank account statement, or Income Tax Assessment Order.
  7. Payment proof — fee of NZ$45 (modes of payment).
B. Foreign Passport Holders with OCI Card

Eligibility: For OCI cardholders, an NRI Certificate is issued only for the purpose of admission of family members to an Indian University under the NRI Quota.

Documents required:

  1. Completed and signed Miscellaneous Consular Services application form.
  2. Completed NRI Parity Certificate Declaration form (https://www.cgiauckland.gov.in/content/DeclarationforNRIandNRIparity.pdf).
  3. Original foreign / NZ passport and original OCI Card, plus photocopies of pages showing visa, arrival, departure and immigration stamps.
  4. Copy of OCI Card, together with proof that the certificate is required for admission to an Indian University under the NRI Quota (e.g. university correspondence or admission notice).
  5. Proof of address in New Zealand — any one of: NZ driving licence, photo ID issued by a NZ government agency, water/telephone/electricity bill, current bank account statement, or Income Tax Assessment Order.
  6. Payment proof — fee of NZ$45 (modes of payment).
