Procedure

Step 1 - Submit Online Application

Submit your application on the OCI Services Portal: https://ociservices.gov.in/onlineOCI/ and upload all the required documents listed below.

Step 2 - Book an Appointment

Following the submission of your online application, please book an appointment for an in-person visit to the Consulate General of India, Auckland. This is required for the verification of your uploaded documents against the originals, without which the application process cannot be finalised.

  • Note: Applications registered with CGI Auckland must bear a reference number beginning with NZLA (applications starting with NZLW are not accepted).

Please carry the following to your appointment:

  • Printout of duly filled Part A and Part B of the application generated from the OCI Portal. Part B (Declaration) must be signed by the applicant. 
  • All original documents as listed below.

Documents Required

(To be uploaded online and carried in original to the Consulate for verification)

Please Note: All documents listed below must be uploaded on the OCI Portal at the time of online submission and carried in original to the Consulate at the time of the appointment. Applications will not be accepted if any requisite document is not uploaded or not produced in original.

  • Photograph of the applicant  (See specifications at the bottom of this page)
  • Declaration by the OCI Applicant —  (Link to the form)
  • Voter ID Surrender (if applicable) — If the applicant previously held an Indian Voter ID, please follow the procedure for online surrender as detailed at the bottom of this page.
  • Current Passport — Original New Zealand / foreign passport of the applicant.
  • Foreign Citizenship Certificate — Original citizenship certificate of the applicant.
  • Cancelled Indian Passport — Original cancelled Indian passport (first and last page to be uploaded on the portal).
  • Surrender Certificate of the applicant or an email confirmation from the concerned Indian Mission/Post if the surrender was processed by their office.Apply for Surrender Certificate
  • Marriage Certificate (if applicable)— Required in cases where the spouse's name was either not recorded, or was recorded differently, in the surrendered Indian passport and is now to be incorporated. Where the marriage has been registered in a foreign jurisdiction, the certificate must be duly apostilled or authenticated by the Government of the country of issue. 
  • Evidence of Divorce — Required to remove a spouse's name that appeared in the surrendered Indian passport. 
  • Address Proof (If the address is not mentioned in any other documents above)
    • A copy of an electricity or any utility bill issued in the applicant's own name, or in the name of a parent, grandparent or spouse.
    • If the bill is in the name of any other relative, an undertaking from that relative confirming that the applicant resides with them.
    • A Lease/Licence Agreement, in the case of tenants.
  • New Zealand Visa and Proof of Residence (for non-NZ passport holders) — Applicants holding a passport other than a New Zealand passport must provide a copy of their valid NZ visa, along with proof of residence in New Zealand for at least the past six months. 

Additional documents to be carried during application submission at the Consulate

  • Fee Payment Proof — Fee of NZ$452 applicable. Payment may also be made at the Consulate using a debit card.          View payment details
  • Self-Addressed Courier Envelope (if applicable) — A pre-paid courier envelope with tracking facility must be provided if the applicant wishes to receive the OCI Card by post. A separate envelope is required for each application. If no courier envelope is provided, the OCI Card may be collected in person from the Consulate by the applicant once an email confirming collection has been sent to the registered email ID.

Photograph and Signature Specifications

It is mandatory to upload both the applicant's photograph and signature image during the OCI registration process. Please ensure these digital files are prepared prior to commencing your online application.

General requirements:

  • Two most recent passport-size colour photographs, taken within the last 6 months.
  • The physical photograph must be affixed to the printed application form, while the digital version must be uploaded to the OCI portal. Both photographs must be identical.
  • The digital signature must be uploaded to the OCI portal and must match the signature provided on the physical application form as well as the signature in the applicant's passport.
  • For minor applicants unable to sign, a left thumb impression should be placed within the signature box. Parents are NOT permitted to sign on behalf of the child in this box.
  • The signature or thumb impression must be in blue or black ink only and strictly confined within the prescribed box.

Important: Photographs and signatures that do not conform to the above standards will be rejected and may cause delay in processing the application. Poor-quality uploaded photographs or signatures are among the most common reasons for OCI application rejection.

Steps to Surrender Your Voter ID Online (Form-7 Submission)

Applicants may surrender their Voter ID online by submitting Form-7 through the official portal of the Election Commission of India (ECI). Please follow the procedure outlined below:

Step 1: Search Your Voter Details

Visit: https://electoralsearch.eci.gov.in

Enter your personal details to locate your official voter record.

Step 2: Access Form-7

Go to: https://voters.eci.gov.in

On the homepage, select Form-7 to initiate the surrender process.

Step 3: Register/Login to Submit the Form

Visit: https://voters.eci.gov.in/login

Create an account or log in using your existing credentials. After logging in, complete and submit Form-7 to request the deletion or surrender of your Voter ID.

If you held an Indian Passport but are unable to locate it:

If you previously held an Indian passport but are unable to produce it, please submit the following documents as proof of Indian origin. The first three documents in the list are compulsory. Additional supporting documents from the remainder of the list must also be provided to substantiate your case.

Compulsory Documents:

  1. Travel Summary — Obtained from Immigration New Zealand, confirming travel to New Zealand on an Indian passport.
  2. Copy of Indian Passport.
  3. Police Report — Official report regarding the loss of the Indian passport.

Additional supporting documents (submit as many as applicable):

  1. Indian Domicile Certificate — Issued by a competent authority (e.g., District Magistrate, Sub-Divisional Magistrate, Executive Magistrate).
  2. Indian Passport or OCI Card of parents / grandparents.
  3. Indian Birth Certificate.
  1. Indian Educational Certificates — (Note: multiple certificates will be considered as a single proof).
  2. Indian Marriage Certificate.
  3. Aadhaar Card.
  4. Indian Ration Card.
  5. Indian Government Employment Record.
  6. Indian Voter's Identity Card.
  7. Agricultural Land Documents.
