Surrender of Indian Passport on acquiring of foreign Citizenship

A person who has ceased to be an Indian citizen by virtue of Section 8 or Section 9 of the Citizenship Act, 1955 is required to surrender the documents which he had acquired on the basis of his Indian citizenship to the authorities concerned. Indian Passport is one such document which needs to be surrendered after acquiring foreign nationality.

.The Indian Citizenship Act does not allow dual citizenship. The following acts constitute an offence under the Indian Passport Act, 1967, and may cause uncertain delays/rejections in processing of the applications for Surrender of Indian Passport:

·         Reissue of Indian Passport after acquiring foreign citizenship.

·         Travel on the Indian Passport after acquiring foreign citizenship.

·         Retention of Indian Passport beyond 3 years from the date of acquiring foreign citizenship

·         Availing of /Applying for any Consular Service on Indian Passport (except Surrender of Indian Passport) after acquiring foreign citizenship.
